Event Description

Ontario’s Black Youth Action Plan seeks to restore equitable outcomes for Black youth who experience barriers to education, employment and health as a result of poverty and racism. In Toronto and many Ontario communities, Black children and youth are disproportionately represented in the child welfare, mental health and youth justice systems. Efforts to address this disparity may be ineffective if they fail to acknowledge the impact of racism – historic and present-day – and the resulting trauma. Historic trauma – as a result of colonialism, slavery and oppression – is passed on to future generations and impacts entire communities. Individuals can also experience trauma directly or indirectly through prejudice and race-based violence.

This workshop will benefit social workers, educators, community-based staff and anyone who works with Black children and youth. Participants will explore how outcomes for Black youth are impacted by the attitudes and beliefs of service providers and explore systemic racism underlying barriers experienced by Black children, youth and families.
